Barn #3

Obviously the barn had been there for at least 80 years before giving in to the elements. Insert obligatory comment about how “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” here.

There were some extremely high winds a few weeks ago that tore the roof completely off the barn and blew one side in. In case it’s not obvious from the photo, there’s not a whole lot to block the wind out there.

My uncle’s old barn was kind enough to pause halfway through blowing down so Chris and I could run down there and shoot some pictures.

Noah Strycker is a penguin researcher spending 3 months in Antarctica at a penguin colony. He has a blog which he’s updating every couple days while he’s there. It’s good reading for a lazy morning with a cup of coffee, and some interesting wildlife photos to boot. There aren’t that many posts, so I’d suggest starting at the beginning and working your way through. If nothing else, it’s simply amazing that someone can be in one of the most remote, hostile locations in the world, and yet still be able to update their blog.

Speaking of updating your blog, after today I’ll be largely out of range of decent internet access until after the new year. So have a merry Christmas, and a happy new year!

Shades Ferns #1

So, when I posted the last picture, I promised myself that I’d try to make a post a week, to try and resurrect this blog. We can see how well that turned out. I guess at this point maybe I’ll make it a New Year’s resolution.

At any rate, this photo is from Shades State Park, in western Indiana. The canyons and ravines there have an almost primeval feeling to them, with ferns and moss clinging to the rock walls, and there are some very nice hiking trails. Definitely worth the trip.
