I'm not sure how they did it, and I'm not sure what they hoped to accomplish since comment display was also disabled, but there they were. At any rate, when I enabled comments, I neglected to check the box that emails me whenever comments are held for moderation. It's checked now, so hopefully stuff shouldn't languish in the moderation queue any more.
